Penny fundraiser has $75,000 goal
FLINT (WJRT) -- (04/30/08)-- The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan is launching its new fund raising campaign.
Here's a hint -- it involves plenty of copper.
The Food Bank hopes to raise $75,000 by the end of the summer -- all in pennies.
Every penny collected will be returned to the community through the Kid's Backpack Program and Mobile Food Pantries.
It's a joint effort between Kettering students, the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the MTA.
"Our goal is to raise $75,000 in pennies. Now with our leverage ratio, $75,000 in pennies will work out to over a million dollars in food. It's a pretty grand undertaking, but one that we're very excited about," said Food Bank President William Kerr.
Kettering students designed the collection container.
They're calling it a " Penny Garden."
